Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Keep moving your boundaries, literally and figuratively – this is Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s watchword. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has been inspiring the public for almost 175 years. The museum itself has been a place to meet, enjoy and learn more about superb art.
The Boijmans is built on old traditions, but it is also a museum with a young, dynamic attitude and is in the front line in developments in management, conservation, research, presentation, education and new media. Creativity and innovation are the driving forces in the advancement of the museum. The newly opened public depot next to the museum in the heart of Rotterdam, which is the first fully accessible museum storage facility, is a perfect example of this.
Renovating for the future
The museum building is now undergoing massive refurbishments. Although closing the museum is the last thing we want, it provides a unique opportunity to completely reconsider the building. To apply all the knowledge we have built up over 175 years about what makes a museum successful. And to conduct extensive research into new ways of experiencing art that will connect with generations to come. This allows us to develop a building that is truly equipped for the future, from its foundations to its environmental-control systems. To create an ideal environment for our collection and our visitors. One that actively contributes to enriching the city: sustainable and connecting.
Travelling museum
These years of closure give us opportunities to share our collection with audiences outside our own museum walls. The touring exhibitions programme, which we are proud to present to you here, lets people on all continents experience the collection in person in a whole range of exhibitions during this period.
Like Marcel Duchamp’s La boîte-en-valise (Box in a Suitcase, 1952), an exhibition in a box, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen comes to let you enjoy the wonderful things our collection has to offer. The museum unpacks its extraordinary exhibitions on locations outside the Netherlands to give the public an unforgettable experience. We look forward to seeing you, wherever you are in the world.
